Things to Do in Cartagena After Dental Work: Easy, Low-Effort Days

Short answer: after a cleaning, fillings or veneer prep you can sightsee in Cartagena the same afternoon; after an extraction or implant surgery, plan one quiet day, then stick to shaded, low-effort visits for the next two or three days. The easiest wins are free: the air-conditioned Museo del Oro Zenú on Plaza de Bolívar (free entry, closed Mondays) and an evening stroll on the city walls. Leave diving and long boat days until your dentist clears you; the Divers Alert Network says most dentists recommend four to six weeks of healing before diving after an extraction or implant.
What can you do on the day of dental treatment?
That depends on what was done. A check-up, cleaning, filling, whitening session or veneer preparation usually leaves you numb for a few hours and nothing more. Eat once the numbness wears off, then walk a little in the walled city if you feel like it.
Surgery is different. NHS aftercare advice for extractions says to take it easy for the rest of the day, avoid bending, heavy lifting and exercise, not to rinse for 24 hours, and to avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 to 48 hours. In practice that means your treatment day is a hotel day: rest with your head raised, cool soft food, and an early night. Book your appointment for the morning so any bleeding has settled before evening.
Which low-effort activities suit the first days after treatment?
Cartagena is hot and humid all year, and heat plus a fresh surgical site is not a good mix. Plan outings for the morning or late afternoon, carry water, and go back to air conditioning at midday. These options are short, close together and easy to stop halfway.
Museo del Oro Zenú
Run by the Banco de la República at Carrera 4 #33-26 on Parque Bolívar, this small museum shows pre-Columbian gold work from the Zenú culture. Entry is free. It opens Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 9:00 to 14:00, and closes on Mondays and public holidays. The permanent exhibition is on the second floor and there is a lift. Allow 45 minutes.
Museo Histórico de Cartagena (Palacio de la Inquisición)
On the same square, at Carrera 3 #33-46, the colonial palace covers the city's history from the Inquisition to independence. El Universal reported in April 2026 an adult ticket of COP 24,000, with opening Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 18:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 16:00. Combine it with the gold museum for an easy half day with shade and a bench in Plaza de Bolívar between the two.
Museo Naval del Caribe and the Museo de Arte Moderno
Both are inside the walled city. El Universal reported in April 2026 that the naval museum (Calle San Juan de Dios #3-62) charges COP 24,000 for adults and opens daily 10:00 to 18:00, and that the modern art museum on Plaza San Pedro Claver charges foreign adults COP 25,000 and is closed on Mondays. Both are indoor, quiet visits of about an hour.
A sunset walk on the walls
The ramparts around the old town are a public walkway and cost nothing. The stretch is flat, with breeze from the sea in the late afternoon. Walk as far as you are comfortable and step down at the next ramp. This is the best low-effort activity in the city from day two onward.
Getsemaní in the early evening
The neighbourhood next to the walled city is known for its street art and Plaza de la Trinidad. It is flat and walkable, and gets busy at night, so go before dark if you want calm. Skip the bars on the first two nights if you had surgery.
How do the main options compare?
| Activity | Effort | Advertised price (date) | Shade or AC | Earliest day after surgery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Museo del Oro Zenú | Very low | Free (Banco de la República, checked Oct 2026) | Indoor | Day 1 or 2 |
| Museo Histórico (Palacio de la Inquisición) | Low | COP 24,000 adult (El Universal, Apr 2026) | Mostly indoor | Day 2 |
| Museo Naval del Caribe | Low | COP 24,000 adult (El Universal, Apr 2026) | Mostly indoor | Day 2 |
| Museo de Arte Moderno | Low | COP 25,000 foreign adult (El Universal, Apr 2026) | Indoor | Day 2 |
| Walk on the city walls | Low | Free | Open air, go after 16:30 | Day 2 |
| Castillo San Felipe de Barajas | Medium (ramps, tunnels, steps) | COP 38,000 full rate (El Universal, Feb 2026) | Little shade | Day 3 or later |
| Rosario Islands boat day | Medium to high | Varies by operator | Sun exposure | Only after your dentist agrees |
| Scuba diving | High | Varies by operator | Not relevant | Usually 4 to 6 weeks after extraction or implant (DAN) |
The "earliest day" column is a planning guide for a routine extraction or a single implant, not medical advice. Your own dentist's instructions come first.
Is Castillo San Felipe worth it after dental work?
Yes, but not on day one. The fortress is a climb up ramps and stone steps with very little shade, and the tunnels are narrow. Go at 8:00 when it opens, or late in the afternoon. The castle is run by the Escuela Taller Cartagena de Indias. A February 2026 El Universal report gave the full rate as COP 38,000, while the official fortifications site still listed a lower, undated rate when we checked, so confirm the price at the box office. Colombians enter free on the last Sunday of most months, which makes those days crowded.
What should you eat in Cartagena after dental work?
For the first days, choose soft food and chew on the other side. Good local options are fresh fruit juices (ask for no ice if your teeth are sensitive, and drink from the glass rather than a straw after an extraction), soups once they have cooled down, eggs, rice dishes, fish cooked soft, and ripe avocado. Avoid crunchy fried snacks such as patacones and chicharrón, very spicy sauces and anything scalding hot. Coconut lemonade and other sweet drinks are fine in moderation, but rinse with water afterwards.
What should you watch out for?
- Heat and dehydration. Long walks at midday can make swelling and fatigue worse. Keep outings short and drink water.
- Boats and sea water. Island speedboats bounce hard on the waves, and sea water on a fresh wound is a risk. Book island days at the end of your trip, not between surgery and your check.
- Alcohol and smoking. Avoid both for at least 24 to 48 hours after an extraction (NHS); your dentist may ask for longer after implants or grafts.
- Diving and snorkelling mouthpieces. DAN says two weeks is too soon to dive after an extraction or implant and that your surgeon should approve biting on a mouthpiece first.
- Booking too tight. Keep the day before your follow-up appointment free, and do not book non-refundable tours until you know how you feel.
- Bleeding at night. Bite firmly on gauze for 30 minutes. If it continues, call your clinic's emergency number. Save it in your phone before you leave the chair.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to the beach after a tooth extraction in Cartagena?
Sitting in the shade on the beach is fine from the second day if you feel well. Swimming, sun for hours and alcohol are better left until your dentist has checked the site.
How many days should I wait before a Rosario Islands trip?
There is no fixed rule. After cleanings or veneers you can go any time. After surgery, wait until your follow-up visit and ask your dentist, because the boat ride is rough and you will be in the sun and sea all day.
Which museums in Cartagena are free?
The Museo del Oro Zenú is free, according to the Banco de la República. El Universal also lists the Casa Museo Rafael Núñez in El Cabrero as free.
Are the museums closed on Mondays?
The Museo del Oro Zenú and the Museo de Arte Moderno close on Mondays. The Museo Histórico and the Museo Naval were reported open on Mondays in April 2026. Check before you go, especially on public holidays.
When can I scuba dive after dental implants?
DAN says most dentists recommend four to six weeks of healing after an extraction or implant placement, and some suggest three months before diving on a new implant. Your surgeon should approve biting on a regulator first.
