Where to Stay in Barranquilla and Cartagena for Dental and Surgery Trips

Updated 9 October 2026. Information only, not medical advice.

Short answer: in Barranquilla, stay in the north of the city (Alto Prado, El Prado, Riomar or Buenavista), because most of the top-rated dentists and plastic surgeons in our directory have their offices between Calle 76 and Calle 106. In Cartagena, Bocagrande is the practical base for dental work and surgery: several of the highest-rated clinics sit in its street grid, the hotels have lifts and the airport is about 15 minutes away. The walled city is beautiful, but cobblestones, stairs and old houses make it a better choice for the easy days than for the first nights after surgery.

The two cities are about 133 km apart, roughly two hours by car. Pick one city for treatment and recovery and keep the other for a day trip once your surgeon or dentist says you can travel.

Barranquilla or Cartagena: which city fits your trip?

Barranquilla is a business city with modern towers, shopping malls and a large cluster of clinics in its northern districts. Cartagena is a tourist city first, which means more hotel choice, higher prices in the historic centre and more noise in high season. For dental tourists both work well. For surgery, think about where you want to spend 7 to 14 quiet days, and where your surgeon's post-operative check-ups will be.

Flights matter too, especially from the Dutch Caribbean. Wingo opened a direct Barranquilla to Aruba route on 9 July 2026, with two flights a week on Thursdays and Sundays, according to local press coverage of the launch. Barranquilla airport also has flights to Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Panama City. Cartagena airport has a wider international network, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Panama City and Atlanta. Routes change often, so confirm on the airline's own website before you book.

Where should you stay in Barranquilla for dental work or surgery?

Look at the addresses of the clinics with the most Google reviews on our dentists in Barranquilla page and a pattern appears. Carlos Acevedo Odontología (5.0 from 385 reviews) is in the Gran Boulevard centre in Riomar, Dentisalud (4.9 from 399) is in Mallplaza Buenavista, and Odontología con Propósito, Dra. Indira Gómez (5.0 from 341) is in Plaza del Prado. Clínica Dental Oral Care, the most reviewed dental listing in the city (5.0 from 2,357), is a little further south near Carrera 44.

Plastic surgery follows the same map. On our plastic surgeons in Barranquilla page, Dr. Wilman Gutiérrez Ortiz (5.0 from 346) practises in Plaza del Prado, Dr. Andrés Durán (4.8 from 396) on Calle 85 in Riomar, and Alan González Cirugía Plástica (5.0 from 201) in the Ocean Tower building on Carrera 53. The city also has a recovery house listed with us, Recovery House Barranquilla "Como EnCasa" (4.8 from 425 reviews), in Riomar.

Hotels in the same area with strong guest ratings on Tripadvisor include Estelar en Alto Prado (4.5 from 1,053 reviews), Four Points by Sheraton Barranquilla (4.5 from 966), Hilton Garden Inn Barranquilla (4.4 from 796) and Faranda Collection Barranquilla (4.9 from 169). Staying near your clinic keeps taxi rides short, which matters when you are swollen, wearing a compression garment or numb after a long dental session.

Where should you stay in Cartagena for dental work or surgery?

Bocagrande is the most practical choice. Several of the best-reviewed clinics on our dentists in Cartagena page have Bocagrande addresses, including Sonrisa Perfecta Dental, Tarsys Loayza Roys (5.0 from 2,175 reviews) on Avenida 3 and Dental Tourism Colombia (4.9 from 299) in the Nautilus building on Carrera 2. Clínica Dental Smile Makeover Cartagena (4.9 from 247) is in El Cabrero, between Bocagrande and the walled city, and Álvarez & Arráez Odontología (4.9 from 382) is in the Centro.

For surgery, our plastic surgeons in Cartagena page lists Premium Care Plastic Surgery (4.8 from 184) on Carrera 3 and Dr. Javier Acuña (5.0 from 152) on Calle 6A, both in the Bocagrande grid. Dr. Rei Cirugía Plástica (5.0 from 82) is at Caribe Plaza in Pie de la Popa, and Dr. Fulvio Correa (5.0 from 121) is in Manzanillo del Mar, north of the airport. If your surgeon is in Manzanillo, a hotel in the north of the city may be closer than Bocagrande, so check the map before booking.

Hotel Cartagena Plaza in Bocagrande has a 4.5 rating from 6,935 Tripadvisor reviews. The walled city has the highest-rated boutique hotels, such as Hotel Casa San Agustín (4.9 from 1,517) and Hotel Quadrifolio (4.9 from 799), but they cost more and many are converted colonial houses. If you choose one for a dental trip, ask whether your room needs stairs.

Hotel, apartment or recovery house?

For dental work a hotel is usually enough: you need a quiet room, air conditioning and soft food nearby. After body surgery, many patients prefer a recovery house or a nurse visiting the hotel for the first few days. Ask your surgeon what they recommend and whether they work with a specific recovery house. Our guide to recovery houses, hotels and Airbnb covers what to check.

  • A lift, or a ground floor room. Stairs are hard after abdominal or breast surgery.
  • Strong air conditioning. Both cities are hot and humid all year, and compression garments are warm.
  • A bed and a chair you can get out of without twisting, and a walk-in shower if possible.
  • A 24 hour reception, so someone can call a taxi or help at night.
  • A short, simple route to your clinic. Write the clinic address down in Spanish for drivers.

What should you watch out for?

Do not let the beach decide. Sun, sea water and pools are off limits after most surgery until your surgeon says otherwise, and the heat makes swelling worse. A view of the sea is nice; a short ride to your follow-up appointment is more useful.

Do not plan the drive between the two cities in your first days. Two hours in a car with a fresh wound or drains is uncomfortable, and travel guides advise against driving that road at night. If your clinic is in Barranquilla, stay in Barranquilla until you are cleared, then visit Cartagena.

Check the high season. Cartagena gets very busy around Christmas, New Year and Easter, and hotel prices rise. Book early and choose a hotel with free cancellation in case your surgery date moves.

Finally, the star ratings and review counts in this guide come from Google and Tripadvisor on 9 October 2026. Reviews are useful, but they are not a licence check. Verify your surgeon's registration in ReTHUS and the facility in REPS before you pay a deposit.
