Recovery House vs Hotel vs Airbnb After Surgery in Colombia
Short answer: choose a recovery house after body contouring, combined procedures or any operation where you will need help for the first days; choose a hotel when you want services but can look after yourself; and choose an apartment or Airbnb for dental work, eye procedures or longer stays with a companion who can help you. The deciding factors are how much care you need, how far you are from your clinic, and whether someone is travelling with you.
What does a recovery house actually include?
A recovery house is a residence set up for post-operative patients. Published offers in Colombia typically include 24-hour nursing, help with medication, prepared meals, lymphatic drainage massage and transport to follow-up appointments. Some add laundry, airport pickup and extras such as IV therapy. For example, one Medellín recovery house publishes a daily rate of COP 390,000 for stays of 3 to 19 days and COP 370,000 per day for 20 days or more, including a private room, meals, 24/7 assistance and laundry. Prices change, so always ask for a written quote and a list of what is included.

When is a hotel enough?
A hotel works well when your procedure is less invasive and you can move, shower and dress on your own after a day or two: dental implants and veneers, eye surgery, small aesthetic treatments, and some facial procedures. You get housekeeping, a front desk at night and easy food delivery. Choose one close to your clinic, with an elevator and a quiet room away from the street. A hotel will not give you nursing care, so arrange lymphatic drainage or wound care through your clinic if you need it.
When does an apartment or Airbnb make sense?
An apartment suits longer stays, families and companions. You get a kitchen, a washing machine for compression garments and more space for less money per night. The trade-offs: nobody checks on you, there is no night desk if something goes wrong, and quality varies. Read recent reviews carefully, check for an elevator and stairs, confirm the building has 24-hour security, and make sure your companion can reach you and the clinic at any time.

How long should you book?
Book for the whole period your surgeon wants you nearby, not just the first nights. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises waiting five to seven days before flying after body procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation, and seven to 10 days after procedures of the face. Colombian surgeons' patient guides commonly recommend 10 to 14 days near the clinic after larger operations such as a tummy tuck. Many patients spend the first week in a recovery house and then move to a cheaper hotel or apartment for the remaining days.
