Curaçao to Medellín for Dental Work: SVB Rules, Flights, Prices and Clinics

Updated 30 October 2026. Information only, not medical advice.

Medellín is a direct flight of about 1 hour 50 minutes from Curaçao, and Medellín clinics advertise porcelain veneers from about USD 275 to USD 490 per tooth and a single implant with crown from about USD 1,200 to USD 1,550 (advertised prices checked 30 October 2026). For most adults on Curaçao the bill is private: the SVB basic insurance (BVZ) dental package covers check-ups, cleaning, fillings, extractions and dentures, not implants, crowns or veneers, and treatment abroad is only paid after a specialist referral and prior SVB approval. Dutch passport holders need no visa for Colombia.

Does SVB (BVZ) pay for dental work in Colombia?

In most cases, no. The SVB page on the basic health insurance (BVZ) sets out two separate rules that matter here.

  • Dental care on Curaçao is limited. Adults over 18 qualify for BVZ dental care only if they can show an income below NAf 12,000 a year. People under 18, people without means and pensioners qualify regardless of income. You register with a participating dentist on Curaçao, who asks SVB for approval.
  • The package is basic. It lists a yearly preventive check, tartar removal, fluoride (from age 6), sealing, dentures, fillings and extractions. Other treatment is only covered when needed because of a serious congenital or acquired condition. Implants, crowns and veneers are not on the list.
  • Care abroad needs approval first. BVZ treatment abroad (medische uitzending) applies when the examination or treatment is not possible on Curaçao, on the indication of a local medical specialist and after approval by the College Medische Uitzendingen. Patients are generally sent to providers that have an agreement with SVB.

Colombia is the main destination for those approved referrals: the SVB 2017 annual report counted 785 of 1,034 medical referrals going to Colombia. Elective dental work you choose yourself is a different route. A Curaçao court ruled in 2019 that SVB was right to refuse reimbursement for care a patient had received abroad without prior approval. If you have private or employer insurance instead of BVZ, ask your insurer in writing before you book.

How do you fly from Curaçao to Medellín?

Two airlines fly nonstop between Curaçao (CUR) and Medellín José María Córdova (MDE):

  • Wingo lists the flight at about 1 hour 50 minutes. On 30 October 2026 its route page showed one-way fares from USD 126 for November 2026, and Google Flights listed three direct Wingo flights per week.
  • Z Air, the Curaçao-based regional airline, says it has flown Curaçao to Medellín since December 2021.
  • Copa Airlines connects through Panama City. Its route page showed round trips from USD 409 for late October and November 2026.

Fares change daily, so treat these as a snapshot. MDE is about 35 km from central Medellín according to Avianca, so plan for a 45 to 60 minute transfer to El Poblado or Laureles, where many dental clinics are.

Do you need a visa or forms to enter Colombia?

No visa is needed. The Cancillería list of visa rules (May 2026 edition) shows that Colombia does not require a visa for short visits from the Netherlands, with Curaçao listed separately under the same answer. The migration officer stamps your permitted stay on arrival; a dental trip of one or two weeks is well within a normal tourist stay.

Migración Colombia describes its Check-MIG pre-registration as free and optional. You can complete it from 72 hours up to one hour before the flight to speed up the passport check. At the border you may be asked for a return ticket and your address in Colombia, so keep your hotel booking and the clinic's address at hand.

What do Medellín clinics advertise for common treatments?

The table below compares prices that three Medellín practices publish on their own websites. They are advertised starting prices checked on 30 October 2026, not quotes. Your price depends on the clinical exam, materials and the number of teeth.

TreatmentColombia Care DentalDental Tourism ColombiaDra. Carolina Macareno
Porcelain veneer, per toothUSD 275USD 490USD 550 to 850
Composite veneer, per toothfrom USD 119 (lowest veneer price)USD 250not listed

The spread is wide for the same word. A "porcelain veneer" at one clinic may be a different material, lab or warranty than at another. Ask every clinic to name the implant brand, the crown material and exactly what the price includes. For more on veneer pricing, see our guide to dental veneers in Colombia.

How many days do you need in Medellín?

It depends on the treatment. Colombia Care Dental gives this guide on its site: whitening in one visit, composite veneers in about two days, porcelain or zirconia veneers and crowns in 2 to 5 days, and a single implant in two trips about six months apart (3 to 5 days, then 2 to 3 days). A full arch on implants also takes two visits of 5 to 7 days. The short flight is an advantage here: from Curaçao the second implant trip is a weekend rather than a long-haul journey.

Which Medellín dental clinics are highest rated in the directory?

Our Medellín dental directory lists more than 35 practices with their Google ratings. Among the clinics with the most Google reviews on 30 October 2026:

Ratings measure patient experience, not clinical outcome. Use them to make a shortlist, then compare written treatment plans. Our guide on where to stay in Medellín compares El Poblado, Laureles and Envigado for short medical stays.

What should you watch out for?

  • Quotes without an exam. A price based on photos is an estimate. Ask for a written plan with the tooth numbers, materials and total after the first consultation.
  • Too many teeth. Some full-smile offers include 16 to 20 veneers. Ask why each tooth needs one, and get a second opinion if a healthy tooth is to be filed down.
  • Aftercare at home. Your dentist on Curaçao may be reluctant to adjust work done elsewhere. Ask the Medellín clinic for the x-rays, the implant brand and part numbers, and the warranty terms in writing.
  • Insurance assumptions. Do not count on SVB or a private policy paying afterwards. Get a written answer before you travel.
  • Registration. Colombian dentists must be registered with the health authorities. You can ask the clinic for the dentist's name and registration and check it in the national register (ReTHUS) before you pay a deposit.
