Today I had a consultation at the Institute of Functional Medicine and I want to publicly express my dissatisfaction. Two weeks ago, I made an appointment there, asking how much the consultation cost. I was told it was 200,000 pesos and that it included a one-hour general assessment where they would explain what functional medicine entailed. When I arrived for the appointment, the doctor asked me why I was there and how I got there. I explained that I wasn't feeling well, that my immune system had been a bit weak for the past few months, and that I wanted to change my lifestyle habits, mainly my diet. Up to that point, everything seemed normal, but then she gave me an informed consent form that I had to sign beforehand, but which stated that I had been given information that I had never actually received. When I told the doctor that I hadn't been given that explanation, she said she would provide it later. Afterward, she performed a general diagnosis, reviewing my medical history and asking me some questions, including what I believed were important for the consultation: my eating habits. Following this, I told her I'd like her to tell me something about functional medicine, about her recommendations and suggestions, and she said she would send it to me in writing later (I don't know what she meant), that I should take it easy, and that she would later tell me the only food she was going to prohibit. She then told me to get on the treatment table because she was going to give me neural therapy, as I had previously mentioned that my tonsils hurt. My biggest complaint, in addition to the fact that the experience didn't align with the purpose of my consultation, arose when, upon leaving the office to pay, I was charged 200,000 pesos, BUT ALSO 70,000 pesos for the neural therapy, a procedure I was never informed would have an additional cost. I am filing this complaint because, firstly, the service is not consistent with the price (I understand that they cannot establish a therapy without prior examinations, but at the very least, if I go to this type of consultation, it is because I am seeking an answer about a different medical alternative; otherwise, I would have simply made an appointment with a bioenergetic therapist or a homeopathic doctor). Secondly, because they made me sign an informed consent form that contained very little information. And thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, because before performing a procedure that has an additional cost, they should inform the patient, and the patient should decide whether or not they agree with said cost, which is excessive for an equally expensive consultation.
